Week 5, Question 1

1). Have you ever been influenced by a speaker? Think of the best speaker you've ever heard. What was it about that speaker that made his or her communication memorable? Think of the worst speaker you've ever heard. What do you remember about his or her message?

I think we all have been influenced by speakers. The introduction in the headline clearly states public communication doesn’t just belong to the famous, but everyday, average people standing up and speaking to audiences to make a difference. With that said, I think one of the most memorable public communication speakers was when my sister gave a speech on donating your body to human research at a community college in Fremont.

Her appeal to the audience was within all realms discussed last week which is why I feel that her speech was memorable. She had confidence on the topic gave an ample amount of reasons why and even brought a light humor to it making it a topic that was not at all morbid or discomforting to sit through.

I don’t think I’ve heard a speaker that was so bad that I would define him or her as the worst, however, I think throughout my college experiences, there have been a few who were noteworthy because of the following: they were nervous causing them to stutter. I think that this makes his or her message impossible to remember.

  1. Hello Jane Jolie! I'm glad you found your sister's presentation useful. Think back to a bad speaker, maybe not the worst, but bad. What were some qualities that you observed that made the speech bad? Are you able to remember what the speaker talked about? Or were your memories of the terrible qualities the speaker exhibited?

  2. I think one of the worst was when a speaker in my class kept saying Um throughout the whole speech. I know that people have a habit of doing this but along with his monotone speech and constant pausing, he seemed very unprepared. It was a demonstration speech and he chose to do it on putting grip tape on a skateboard and all you could hear is him scraping the tape on to the board.

  3. I thought it was great how you were able to list your sister as one of the great speakers you heard. The qualities you mentioned about her definitely makes her an effective speaker.

I am happy that you haven't encountered bad speakers, but something tells me you will one day.

Preparation is key to delivering a great speech, therefore one may think that many speakers don't prepare enough for their audiences, which begs to question: Do they not care enough of what we think about their message and them?

I remember a few years back, a professor who was very ego-centric and constantly bragging about himself.

He was giving a presentation one day and he not only disappointed everybody by his speech, but he also forgot his speech notes.
