Persuasive Speakers

*1). Think of a speaker you admire. Does his or her power to persuade come from ethos, pathos, or logos? Think about your own ability to persuade others. What personal qualities do you have that make you persuasive? Does Aristotle's classification scheme work for them, or do they fit into another category?

One of the speakers I most admire listening to is Genelle Austin-Lett. I say that not to suck up because she is one of the teachers in the COMM department but because I really do think she speaks very well. I think that she utilizes all forms of persuasion, ethos, pathos and logos depending on the situation or topic of choice. To me, she is a good speaker because of her versatility in speech and her ability to interchange the three accordingly.

When I think about my persuasive skills, I would have to say that that my appeal is based on emotion, pathos. I am not very persuasive and I know that this is not the most credible way to persuade but it is the truth.

  1. Hello janejolie,

I have to agree with you about Prof. Genelle Austin-Lett.She is a very experienced speaker, and her skills show even in regular conversation within the classroom. Her ability to speak and use all three forms of persuasion, proves her to be a very effective communicator. The skills that she passes on to her students, are ones that can/will be used throughout life.

To comment on your statement about your own personal skills. I feel that we all use frequently express emotion when in communication with one another, and that it is not a bad thing when used to persuade.

  2. I have to agree with you on proffessor Genelle Austin-Lett. I took argument and debate last semester and for the final which was a round robin debate within three classes or so she spoke to the whole group. I was so in love with her way of speaking and portraying the message that I had to take a class with her and this semester I am signed up for a class. Her usages of Aristotle pathos ethos and logos make her a very well rounded speaker like you said and makes her classes enjoyable and very effective.

  3. Hello Jane Jolie! Besides using ethos, pathos and logos, what does Genelle Austin-Lett do when she speaks that captures the audience? What type of skills does she portray when speaking? What are some things you can learn from her and utilize in your own presentations, or everyday speaking?
