What concept/s in this class have you found the most interesting? What was it about that concept that you found interesting?
One concept from this course that I thoroughly enjoyed was our discussion on nonverbal communication. For me, nonverbal communication governs many aspects of communication in general. For example, when choosing a prospective romantic partner, one may use physical attributes as a standard when deciding. The nonverbal cues that a person gives off in terms of physical attributes affect a prospective partner’s decision. Nonverbal cues include a persons dress or physical beauty. In turn, dress alone is enough to define a person’s style and or personality. If dress is responsible for giving off a certain image to another person, he/she dressing a certain way may rethink their choices because of the certain image being portrayed. For example, a person who is in search of a job does not want to stop by prospective places in a t-shirt, jeans, and flip flops rather one should opt for more professional attire that would increase his or her chances of receiving a positive reaction from employers.
Nonverbal communication can also be linked to negative things. For instance, if dress can affect a persons view on an individual. Any person can change their image by changing their dress. This could be linked to cases of deception and how communication can be negative.

I really liked learning learning about non-verbal communication as well. I think that we send several messages out everyday when we put on clothes, jewelry, or even make gestures. These messages are being judged, perhaps even before we are. It is definitely an important topic to know more about because we can recognize our own negative patters of imposing stereotypes and opinions of people without getting to know them first. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your views on non verbal communication. I don't think people realize how much we use non verbal communication. People can say a lot without saying anything at all. Theway a person wants to appear to someone else without saying anything can be done by they way they dress and act. It is important to look certain ways when going to do certain things like you said job interviews, etc. The only downside of non verbal communication is often that is where stereotypes occurs because we assume before getting to know the person by seeing the others persons appearance or gestures.
ReplyDeleteHI Jane Jolie,
ReplyDeleteI agree, non verbal communication is very interesting and important to our lives. I like when you said that non verbal communication helps you decide of romantic partners. Many people dont look at physical attributes as forms of non-verbal communication. But the way you dress, look and present yourself are all forms of communicating information about yourself. Its true what you said that the way a person dresses defines their style and in return defines information about who they are. It really does let off a certain image about themselves. I never though about this but after reading other peoples blogs in the class when we discussed this topic did I realized it. I then realized its important how I dress at work because it presents information about me, and could even help me get a promotion.
Good Post!
I like learning about non verbal communication. It is a tricky subject because it is not exact and not applicable to every individual. Yet, there are many clues and messages our nonverbal behavior can exhibit that will enhance one's ability to communicate. I like how the book discussed the difference of nonverbal communication in different cultural settings, group settings, and individual conversations. It is interesting to read people's nonverbal actions change in large group settings, small groups, and one on one conversations. Nonverbal communication feels like code breaking to me. Finding the clues can discover lots of valuable information without conversations.
